Artifacts Overview

Math Stations / Workshop

The approach of turning units into mini-lessons that the students could work through in stations (segments), at their own pace, completely changed how I differentiated instruction in my classroom. Through the use of technology, I could prepare a variety of lessons with varying degrees of difficulty.

Meeting The Standards

Standard 2
c.
Customize and personalize learning activities to address students’ diverse learning styles, working strategies, and abilities using digital tools and resources

Our class blog was the platform for all of our digital content and lessons to be stored. Student work and materials created by peer tutors was also posted online. The blog set up was perfect for math stations. Many of the students and parents were subscribed to the class blog posts and the notifications that they automatically received added another layer of communication and support between school and home.

Since math stations were completed by students, at vary paces, it was important to provide differentiated levels of content, instruction, and assignments. Through the use of the blog, I was able to direct students towards the work they were to complete by linking up materials appropriately.

Standard 5
b.
Exhibit leadership by demonstrating a vision of technology infusion, participating in shared decision making and community building, and developing the leadership and technology skills of others

I had the opportunity to allow many colleagues to observe and visit my classroom during the course of the year in which I was piloting iPads in the classroom. To be exact, there were 38 teachers/admin to observe my classroom during the year. Stressful! :)

This allowed me to share ideas on how to integrate technology into the classroom and show many other professionals how the students can actively engage in the learning materials at varying paces and with differentiated lessons, all at the same time.

Math Stations this Week!
During the next four days, we will continue to work towards mastery in two specific areas:
  • Functions: equations with two creating input/output tables, writing the equation, plotting the (x, y) coordinates on a graph.
  • Multiplying Decimals

Station #1 - Review
1) Finish the function equation practice questions from last Thursday, which was started in class. Find the section in your notebook that is titled, Practice Level 1 or 2, and continue writing down the questions and showing your work there. (choose only one level) 2) Correct your Practice Level 1 or 2 practice questions on functions. Ask Mr. Bowdoin for answer key. 3) Watch and take notes on the 2 multiplying decimal videos, click here. 4) Pull out the green multiplying decimals handout and work you completed for homework this weekend. The answer key to check your answers is in your Daily Work folder in Dropbox or click here and click download.
  • IF this handout was not done, do this for homework tonight.
STOP. Please show Mr. Bowdoin your work and all corrections for the multiplying decimals handout.
Station #2 - Model/Video Lesson
Please have your notebook ready to take notes on two KA lessons. Log into KA. Plus, grab a half piece of graph paper off the counter. 1) Watch the video, 'Plot Ordered Pairs'. Complete the graph paper with the video and have notes on the following:
  • Where is the x-axis and the y-axis? Label them on your graph paper.
  • Where is the point (6, -8)? Plot the point and label it.
  • Check to see that you numbered the lines on your coordinate plane
2) Watch the video, 'Quadrants of Coordinate Plane '. You should have notes on the following:
  • Again, using your graph paper, label the x-axis and y-axis.
  • Label each of the 4 quadrants, as shown.
  • Find and plot the point (-7, 7), just like the video. Label it on your graph paper.
  • Make 3 more points on your graph paper, and labelthe coordinates.
    • Did you choose to place them in the other 3 quadrants?
STOP here and ask any questions before moving on to the KA practice.
Station #3 - Practice
1) For these first three practice sections, you do not need to use your notebook. Make sure you are logged into KA. Complete each section until it shows that you have mastered it. 2) For this next section, you need your notebook to show your work. STOP, check this station off, on the SMART Board.
Station #4 - Apply
This station will help you connect the different lessons on functions and graphing from the past few days. Watch the 3 minute video, and then click on the questions below to tackle the problems.
Complete all the following questions in your notebook. You will need graph paper! Click here to START.

Station #5 - Create
Video Recording Group Project
  • You will be in groups on Monday.
  • You will be given either a multiplying decimals question and/or a function (equation) question.
  • You will be recorded, showing your work and explaining, by another student.
  • It will be graded as a Quest score.
  • More details shared on Monday.

Homework: Click here to go to the Assignment page.
  • Continue working on stations #1-4 at home, as needed.
  • Plan on 15 minutes per night.
Today: Math Station Activities - we have less options today, as we prepare and study for our quest, tomorrow.
