Co-Authored Book on MOOCs

One of the more intense ten weeks of my Masters program occurred during a term when eight students and colleagues came together to author a book on MOOCs. Free online courses, open to the public, were making news around the country as they continued to grow.

Meeting The Standards

c.
Evaluate and reflect on current research and professional practice on a regular basis to make effective use of existing and emerging digital tools and resources in support of student learning

During the ten-week graduate course, in which we wrote a book about MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses), there was a heavy emphasis on locating and analyzing current research regarding the subject of online courses. More specificaly, massive courses where the student count numbered in the thousands! The book reflects on both the pros and cons of moving towards such a system where massive online courses are the norm for higher education.

Additionally, this provided opportunity to reflect on how, as a middle school teacher, the content I place online can impact not only my students but those beyond our classroom who seek the information out via internet searches. All the content we post is a part of our classes digital footprint and as my professional footprint as a teacher, integrating technology on a daily basis in the math classroom.

Contribute to the effectiveness, vitality, and self-renewal of the teaching profession and of their school and community

The book has been on sell, through Amazon, for over a year now. It has continued to be discussed in a variety of forums through the work of some of the co-authors who helped write the book. The fact that it was the first of its kind on the shelves, regarding this topic, is a testament to the value and contributions it is making education.
