Technology Integration in the Classroom!

The environment in my classroom transitioned from the first year, where all technology was teacher driven and implemented...to an atmosphere of student collaboration and ownership of individual learning styles as students strived towards mastery.

Artifact 1

YouTube Channel

Used extensively as a location for mini-lesson videos created by teacher and peer tutors. Additionally, students uploaded work to this channel for class presentations, study groups, or assignment submission.

Artifact 2

Math Peer Tutors

My Math Concepts classes had 15-20 peer tutors volunteer to work with my students on a daily basis. By guiding them in the use of mentoring/teaching with technology, the peer tutors were able to connect with a greater number of students.

Artifact 3

BookCreator Project

Students demonstrated their proficiency on how to solve one-step equations by creating a book. Within each book are snapshots of their class notes, screencasts demonstrating the steps as students narrate and show the process, and visual examples on how to check their work.

Artifact 4

House Design & Modeling

This project involved students designing floor plans on graph paper. Once mathematical calculations had been made in regards to the surface area and perimter of each room and the entire house, the scaled drawings were used to create a model of the house on iPads. Further work was then done on cost calcuations before students finished.

Artifact 5

PicCollage Posters

Used as one of the assessment options available to check for proficiency, PicCollage allowed students to quickly capture their knowledge of a concept and present it in a clear manner. It was most often implemented for students who struggled with a step-by-step approach to solving math problems.

Artifact 6

Proficiency Grading & Ninja Tracker

During the 2012-2013 school year, our math department adopted a proficiency based grading model. Students in my classes tracked their progress using a series of 'ninja' levels as they moved towards showing mastery of each of the standards.

Artifact 7

Google Forms

Google forms transformed multiple procedural aspects of our classroom environment. Use ranged from check-in/out systems for the classroom, formative assessments, surveys, homework collection, test re-take requests, and anything else to eliminate paper traffic. With 180+ middle school students moving in and out of the classroom daily, they were a huge time saver.

Artifact 8

Math Stations / Workshop

The approach of turning units into mini-lessons that the students could work through in stations (segments), at their own pace, completely changed how I differentiated instruction in my classroom. Through the use of technology, I could prepare a variety of lessons with varying degrees of difficulty.

Artifact 9

Co-Authored Book on MOOCs

One of the more intense ten weeks of my Masters program occurred during a term when eight students and colleagues came together to author a book on MOOCs. Free online courses, open to the public, were making news around the country as they continued to grow.

Artifact 10

Socrative

Live Q&A sessions allow students in a 1:1 environment the ability to receive instant feedback. This tool also allowed students to complete exit tickets in a quick, efficient manner as they were preparing to leave the classroom. Those needing attention were quickly pinpointed and follow ups used relavent data.

Artifact 11

Bowdoin Class Blog

A place where students could go to know exactly what we were studying and working on each day. Additionally, it was instrumental in show-casing student work, providing extra help and tutoring tools.

Learn More

An average of 150 students visited it daily.

Artifact 12

Schoology / Edmodo

Prior to teaching in a pilot classroom, with 1:1 iPads for all students, my classes used an online learning management system (LMS) as a means of providing material online and collecting assignment submissions.

Artifact 13

Accessibility to Technology

This picture was taken during lunch hour! Students regularly used part of their lunch activity time to continue to work on math station projects or other assignments. While still in pilot phrase, students did not take the technology home. Accessibility was key during the school day.

Artifact 14

Twitter / Professional Blog

Used as both a platform to model and develop my digital footprint as a math teacher using technology in the classroom. Plus, countless lesson ideas and strategies for math problem solving were discovered through colleagues.
